A Better Choice for Hit Music Lovers
Set to Launch this Weekend

Winnipeg, July 28, 2011 --- Evanov Radio Group announced today the imminent arrival of its newest station, Energy 106.

The brand new station is launching at noon this Friday just in time to kick-off the Civic Holiday Weekend with 10,000 songs in a row!. Energy 106 will blend Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR), Top 40 music featuring such artists as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Pitbull, Britney Spears, Down With Webster, Simple Plan.

With a target core audience of 18-34 year olds, it is expected that the station will explode on the scene and make significant gains in attracting listeners who are looking for a station format that caterers to their taste and who have expressed interest in a better alternative to what is currently heard in the market.

“When considering what format to adopt, the overwhelming demand and consistent desire expressed by potential listeners was for a ‘better choice’ in the music they liked. Just in the testing phase alone without any promotion or advertising, we have been besieged by positive comments about the sound of our newest station and how it offers a better choice for young Winnipeggers ” said Paul Evanov , VP Programming.

Evanov Radio Group is a dynamic, independent broadcast company currently holding twelve broadcast licences, including one digital. The company currently operates two radio stations in Halifax, one in Hawkesbury, one in Ottawa, four in the GTA plus one digital, and two in Brantford/Kitchener/Waterloo. Not just hockey coming to Winnipeg.
Team Evanov also set to play.

Toronto, May 24, 2011 - A hockey team is not the only franchise Winnipeg may win this year. Evanov Radio Group, an independent company in the Canadian Broadcasting arena, announced that it has successfully completed negotiation with Newcap Inc. to acquire the assets of its two radio stations in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The acquisition is subject to CRTC approval that is expected by the end of the year. The purchase of CKJS-AM and CHNK-FM will complement and be a great addition to Evanov’s newest Winnipeg station CFJL-FM (106.1) set to launch this summer.

Bill Evanov, President and CEO commented :” With the broadcasting landscape being dominated primarily by a few gigantic multi-media operators, having the ability to operate a cluster of three in this market, will give all three stations the best shot at success and at delivering the very best service to their listeners. Our team is excited by the challenge and opportunity to be an integral part of Winnipeg where all three of our stations will be operated locally.”

Evanov plans to continue to run the two incumbent stations from the same studio locations and with the same staff that has been a part of building and keeping these stations a part of Winnipeg’s choice for radio listeners. While the challenges to make these stations more successful are many, the company is confident that the incumbent staff together with new ownership management will prove a successful combination. CKJS-AM operates as an ethnic station, while CHNK-FM operates as a specialty station. These two types of stations are not generally as financially successful as mainstream commercial radio stations.

The Evanov Radio Group is a dynamic, independent broadcast company that with the approval of this purchase will operate fourteen broadcast licences, including one digital, in markets ranging from small to large. Current markets include Hawkesbury, Ottawa, Greater Toronto Area, Brantford, Winnipeg and Halifax. Evanov Radio Group with over 25 years experience in the radio industry, is based out Toronto, and employs 250.

2011 INDUCTEE TO CANADIAN MUSIC & BROADCASTING INDUSTRY HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCED MR. BILL EVANOV

Bill Evanov, President and CEO of Evanov Communications Inc., will be celebrated for his achievements and contributions to Canada’s musical heritage with an induction to the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame. He will be honoured on Thursday, March 10, 2011 during the Broadcast Industry Awards gala at Canadian Music Week in Toronto. Previous inductees include: Gordon Lightfoot, David Foster, The Guess Who, Alanis Morissette, Allan Waters, Tom Cochrane, Ronnie Hawkins and Rush …… to name a few.
Bill Evanov is the Founder and President of Evanov Communications Inc., one of Canada’s fastest growing independent broadcast companies. A true entrepreneur, Evanov went from owning 3 radio stations in Toronto to 11 across the country in a span of just six years and in an age where independent radio ownership has drastically declined due to the consolidation of large corporate multi-chain broadcasters, he has stood firm and bucked the trend. It is one thing to operate radio stations, it is another to be hugely successful doing so, especially in major markets where competition from the large corporations is extreme.

Years ago, when a young Bill Evanov decided to get into radio, he knocked on the doors of CHUM, CFRB, CKEY, CKFH, CFGM, CHIC and CHFI; but was rejected by all due to lack of experience. As fortune would have it, Johnny Lombardi gave him an opportunity at CHIN Radio, a relatively unknown station at the time, and within 18 months Evanov became Vice President Sales.

Johnny Lombardi and Mel Lastman hosted the First Annual “Spaghetti Dig in Contest” of which Evanov became the Chief Organizer. He subsequently morphed this event into the highly successful CHIN International Picnic, which has remained a staple event in Toronto over the last 30 years and known the world over by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest event of its kind

Among his many accomplishments , Evanov created several unique, non cookie-cutter formats including :The Evanov CHR/Dance format which delivers a variety of different genres of rhythmic music – Pop, Rock, Hip-hop, R&B and Dance; The Jewel’s “Light Adult Contemporary” format blending soft, melodic music in a variety of genres from different eras; and in 2007 he launched CIRR-FM known as Proud FM, the world’s first of its kind, that programs to Toronto’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) population.

Evanov is one of the only independent broadcasters left in the country’s largest markets. He is the founder of the famed Summer Rush Concert – the largest annual live concert produced by a radio broadcaster in Canada. Summer Rush, in its 18th year, is a platform for many local artists to perform to a sold-out crowd and is now produced in Halifax as well as Toronto.

Bill Evanov “walks the walk” everyday in support of Canadian music. He has opened the door for independent Canadian musical artists at ALL Evanov stations across the country which has often resulted in being the first to recognize and play fresh new Canadian talent.

Among some of the more notable successes who received first radio airplay radio airplay in the respective market of each Evanov station, are Michael Bublé, Shawn Desman (Juno ’06 winner), Danny Fernandes (MMVA winner & Juno nominee), DJ Danny D (half million CDs sold & Juno nominee), Massari (MMVA winner & Juno nominee), The Sound Bluntz (’03 & ’04 Juno winner), Joee (Juno nominee), Addictiv (Juno nominee), Love Inc. (Juno winner), BKS’s “Rock Em Sock Em Techno” (550,000 copies sold). The stations provided extensive airplay, far exceeding other stations to promote Richard Abel, Amy Sky, Mark Jordan, Jann Arden, Holly Cole, Jesse Cook, Molly Johnson, k.d. lang, Chantal Chamberland, and Serena Ryder.

Bill Evanov strongly supports education with over a million dollars through a series of scholarships and endowments. Some of the partner university and college institutions include Waterloo, Acadia, King’s, Dalhousie, Carlton, Guelph, Sherbrooke, Humber, Western and the University of Manitoba. He is also committed to the Aboriginal Media Fund that encourages, promotes and makes possible the development of aboriginal talent.

ECI radio holdings are both responsive and proactive in the communities they serve. For example, ECI was, the original and still is, the media partner of the Student Crime Stoppers Program, a partnership between the public, the police and the media.

With an enterprising spirit, he has blazed trails and achieved a roster of firsts and milestones in independent radio. He defined dance music as a unique radio format when he re-launched CING FM as Energy 108 in 1990 and took it from 90,000 to over 800,000 weekly listeners (FALL 95 BBM) making it the most popular radio station among teens and young adults. He then recreated the format on CIDC FM and grew it into the #1 CHR station in the country with 853,000 listeners. (BBM S2’09)

ECI is the first broadcaster in Canadian history to elevate female employees to ownership status through new radio license acquisitions

His “Move Like Lightning” and “Just Do It-Make it Happen” philosophy has guided the company to stand strong in the stiffest competition and his extremely tenacious approach and street-fighter attitude have extended to the team he has carefully assembled over the years.

Despite a recent recession where the broadcast industry witnessed hundreds of layoffs and millions of dollars in cut-backs, Evanov managed not only to keep his staff of over 300 employees intact , he maintained the tradition of flying every single employee from across the country to the head office in Toronto for the company’s annual Christmas party.

Evanov sits as a board member with the Ontario Association of Broadcasters and holds membership with several other broadcast organizations. He raises thousands of dollars every year for dozens of charity initiatives including “Boating for the Cure”, an event he personally spearheads within the company that raises thousands of dollars every year for prostate and breast cancer.

Bill Evanov is an entrepreneur and a pioneer. His contribution to the Canadian broadcast industry is considerable and bound to continue.

Evanov Radio Celebrates its 25 Years of Independent Perseverance

Toronto, ON — November 9, 2009 — The landscape of radio has changed drastically in the 25 years since William Evanov acquired CIAO-AM 530 (then 790 AM) in 1984 from Mutual Radio/Radio-Mutuel, represented by Michel Arpin, the current Vice Chair for Broadcasting of the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Changes in CRTC regulations regarding multiple-license ownership and consolidation as well as the worst recession in recent history have proven too much for many independent broadcasters to endure.

Yet, through a combination of meticulous research, creative approaches, strategic promotion and sheer perseverance, Evanov Communications Inc. has not only survived but thrived in the marketplace, proving that independent radio can still be a major contender in an industry crowded with media giants.

One quality that sets ECI apart as a competitor is its sense of perseverance in the face of obstacles. With an enterprising spirit, President and founder William Vasil Evanov has set forth achieving a roster of firsts and milestones in independent radio. It was Evanov himself who defined dance music as a radio format in Canada when he relaunched CING-FM as Energy 108 in 1990, effectively carving out a unique format for Canadian broadcasting.

The same make-it-happen philosophy has guided the company to stand strong in competition with the corporate Goliaths. ECI is currently the only independent broadcaster in the Ottawa and Halifax markets, competing with seventeen commercial stations owned by corporate conglomerates in Ottawa, eight in Halifax, and is one of only two independent broadcasters in the Toronto CMA, competing with 12 stations currently owned by corporate giants. ECI is one of the first broadcasters to offer significant equity to its female executives and employs one of the youngest female vice presidents in Canadian broadcasting.

ECI, which today holds 11 broadcast licenses, is committed to the communities it serves, and stands as the only broadcaster that invests in and owns every building it operates in each local market. Committed to its employees as well, the company is the only employer that brings all of its employees by plane, train, or bus from all of its stations to Toronto every December for the annual Christmas party.

From its humble beginnings, the company has now expanded to incorporate eleven stations in a variety of formats serving communities across Ontario, Nova Scotia, and soon Manitoba. As an independent operator, ECI has taken the path and the effort to develop unique formats rather than the boilerplate American-style mainstream formats adopted by the larger broadcasting corporations in Canada.

In addition to the multilingual format, there are two other formats ECI has cultivated. The Contemporary Hit Radio-Dance format delivers a variety of different types of music—Pop, Rock, Hip-hop, R&B and Dance. This CHR-Dance format is a mainstay of Z103.5 in Toronto (CIDC-FM) and Halifax (CKHZ-FM). Each station is specifically tailored to its particular market, demonstrating its own preference for genres and the inclusion of local talent. When determining the playlist for Z103.5, music programmers look further than just the U.S. Top 40 charts, consulting the request lists from each of the announcers, talking with the DJs who play in nightclubs, and testing each new song with the audience. Z103.5 has also prided itself on programming to diverse communities, playing hits from all over the world, not just from the U.S charts. Unlike the sanitized, run-of-the-mill blueprint used by Top 40 stations that try to emulate the U.S. formula, Z103.5 goes beyond mainstream charts to get to the real heart of what music the audience wants to hear.

CIDC (Z103.5) has been holding the popular annual Summer Rush concerts for seventeen years in Toronto and CKHZ (Z103.5) for three years in Halifax, drawing tens of thousands of fans and such high profile acts as Girlicious, Nelly, Lady GaGa, Akon and many more. Z103.5 Toronto serves nearly a million listeners and has received awards for its involvement with the Toronto Crime Stoppers in programs such as "Student Crime Stoppers," "Gunplay No Way," "The Pathway to Success," and other anti-crime initiatives. Z103.5 Toronto has also won numerous accolades, twice winning "Station of the Year" in the Contemporary Hit Radio category of the Canadian Music Awards, and earning multiple Gold and Silver Medals from the Toronto Sun Readers' Choice Awards for three years running.

ECI also developed "Today’s new Easy Listening" format that characterises The Jewel, blending soft, melodic music in a variety of genres from different eras. The Jewel format plays music that is timeless, whether it was recorded in 2009 or 1966. Sub-genres of music played consist of soft pop vocals, light Adult Contemporary, instrumentals, light classical and Jazz. Local variations of this format are carried on the award-winning CKDX-FM 88.5 in Toronto, CJWL-FM 98.5 in Ottawa, and CKHK-FM 107.7, Hawkesbury's first FM radio station, and will soon be broadcasting at CFJL-FM 106.1 in Winnipeg. In addition to providing Toronto's favourite lite hits, The Jewel 88.5 received a Gold Medal in the 2007 Toronto Sun Readers' Choice Awards.

Established by Evanov in 2007, CIRR-FM Proud 103.9 is the world's first and only commercial terrestrial radio station whose mandate is to serve the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) population. Acclaimed in the Toronto LGBT community, Proud earned awards for "Best Radio Station" as well as "Best Radio DJ" for morning show host Deb Pearce in Xtra! Magazine's 2009 Reader's Poll Edition. In addition to a great blend of music, PROUD distinguishes itself from other stations by providing news, talk and information programming from a unique, inclusive perspective about and for the LGBT community. PROUD is very present in its community, sponsoring the annual LGTB Pride celebrations in Toronto.

CIAO-AM 530, a multilingual station, has been providing quality programming in a variety of languages to hundreds of thousands of new Canadians since 1984. The station is one of the founders of the Canadian Catalogue of Ethnic Music, a resource dedicated to collecting, promoting and distributing music to the industry and the public. In a world where ethnic, religious and economic conflicts often make headline news throughout the year, CIAO's diverse program producers and on-air personnel work side by side in peace and harmony, sharing with the listeners and each other the richness of the diverse heritages and values that bind us together. In Southern Ontario's vibrant cultural mosaic, CIAO-AM 530 is a valued community leader and institution.

ECI has also very recently acquired Brantford's CKPC-FM 92.1 and CKPC-AM 1380, where it will continue to provide local news and information along with great music formats on AM and FM. The CRTC has just approved ECI's application for another broadcasting license in Halifax.

Twenty-five years of perseverance has yielded twenty five years' worth of rewards, as Evanov Communications Inc., the fastest growing independent broadcaster in the country, expands into new territories, acquires new stations and connects with new communities. Yet even as it has proven itself to be a competitive giant, Evanov Communications Inc. has not lost the spirit of an independent business. The company remains truly committed to the communities it serves and to its employees, who work together like family to achieve great goals.

MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Toronto, ON – On October 7, 2009 HFX Broadcasting Inc., a division of the Evanov Radio Group, received the approval of the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (“CRTC”) to operate a second FM radio station in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This approval came after public hearings were held in Halifax in May of this year at which Evanov pointed out there was a need for more variety in the radio services being offered, especially to women. The CRTC noted in its decision that granting Evanov a second licence would allow it to better compete with the other broadcasters in the market.

This decision comes on the heels of a second CRTC approval for Ottawa Media Inc., another Evanov Radio property, to increase the power for its station, CJWL-FM in Ottawa. That decision will now allow the station to be better heard in the city’s downtown core.

Bill Evanov, President of Evanov Communications Inc. said of the approvals:

“Our company has always sought to be competitive in some of Canada’s toughest markets. With both of these approvals, the CRTC has recognized our efforts and has given us the tools we need to meet our objectives in Halifax and Ottawa.”

Evanov Communications Inc. is continually seeking to find creative ways to provide radio service to under-represented markets, and currently has applications pending before the CRTC for both an English and a French language service Quebec City.

Evanov Communications Inc. is an independent broadcasting company with 25 years experience in the radio industry, and operates seven radio stations offering a variety of formats. Based out of Toronto, Evanov Communications Inc. employs over 150 employees in three provinces.
